Most of the old houses in Havana, and the rest of Cuba, had balconies which
are now used for garbage cans and laundry:

I had asked for rooms in the the Casa Particulares with balconies. I
imagined sitting on the balcony and taking photos of the street. None of
our rooms had balconies. Most did not even have windows. It's a different
way of life.
