There are many species of birch trees. Some grow in clusters and some do not. You can find both types in the northeast US.

I considered that the trees might be aspen poplar but they're really too far away for positive identification.

      Lovely shot.  The colors certainly did pop.  Reminds me of lots of
spots here in MN and WI.  But I'd call the trees with the yellow leaves
aspen, or popple.  They are not birch trees.  They have single trunks, not
clusters of trunks like birch do, and the yellow leaves are just what we
were seeing here a week or two ago on our aspen.  The lighter green
conifers are white pines.
