It seems a few of my lifelong beliefs about bees are a bit wrong - I looked
it up.  I'd got it into my head that the queens only made drones near
mating time (which I'd believed to be the end of Summer).  On the other
hand, my brief consultation of a couple of online resources tells me that
drones don't actually gather nectar; if they're loafing about on flowers
it's because they're waiting for queen to show up so they can try to mate
with her (and there'll be several of them to compete for the privilege).

Anyway, if it stings you then it's a girl because the boys are unarmed (the
sting is a modified ovipositor, apparently, which males don't have).   Best
not to find out the hard way though ;)
