You can stay on the line until a human comes on and then ask them to place
your number on the do not call list. I know it is a little like trying to
kill all the mice in my garage, however when you live in the country . .

detects a human it routes the call to one of the call-centre operators,
along with a screenload of whatever data they have - eg subscriber name.
Hence the 1-2 seconds of silence. I've hung up by then.
