Ugh. Well, then. That would be a non-starter. I don't want anything
touching my tires like that. And the thing is, with a notched rim
design where several rollers on either side of the rim, you'd end up
with a better unit.

You could also do this with a "bearing race" design. A typical bearing
race uses to complete rings with the ball bearings inside. however,
there is another variant of this where the inner "ring" doesn't go all
the way around, but is only a segment of an entire ring. The "fork"
would mount to this short segment and the rim, which is the outer ring
of the race, moves freely through this mount. On the rear wheel you
can do the same thing, but with two segments mounted both high and
low. Instead of the chain/chainring design, I'd be tempted to go all
electric.
