[OM] (OM) Studies of tree trunks

For months I have been puzzled by the location of a group of trees
shown in what to me is a stunning very large print made by a local
photographer and on display in the front business space of the local
industrial imaging company.

I could tell that it was of ponderosa pine
trees of considerable age - at least 100 years old. But where?

Ponderosa of that age are not common locally, and the most likely
candidates seemed to be the 120 years-old specimens in Pioneer Park, the
public space in the centre of Alexandra.

Every time I looked at those
trees I could not identify that view.

Then one day I noticed that the
most important tree in the group photo had a unique crease in the bark
at its base, so I decided to look at them all and find that crease. So I
decided to inspect them all and find that crease.

Sure enough, there
was one with that feature, but try as I might without a camera
viewfinder in my hands I could not envisage that view - since there were
commercial buildings and a street in the background, and a garish
childrens' playground laterally. And usually children there as well.

One day I had to deliver my red SUV to a local garage for servicing
early (for me) in the morning, so I decided to take my E-3 plus all digi
lenses along after I had done the delivery, and see what images I could
find.

There was quite contrasty back light - but not to worry, this
was an investigatory trip, not necessarily going to yield great shots.
The ones you can see have been edited significantly in FastStone.

This
turned out to be a great lesson in showing how to find a good image
somewhere inside a rather ordinary view.

With the 40-150 lens it was a
piece of cake to reproduce the basic elements of the image I had for so
long admired, with very little cropping. Here it is. I should go back
and show the general view so that you can see all the distracting
surrounds.
