Thanks to all who commented!
FWIW, and perhaps TMI, the conversion was done in Silver Effex Pro from a
rather flat, low-contrast rgb file. A generous helping of structure and
contrast brought out the more subtle rays to a better approximation of what the
scene actually looked like.
Okay, it didn't look black and white, but I distinctly recall as I looked at
the scene without a viewfinder I got an idea of what the final image would look
like. Lots of times my visions are a little, well, imprecise. This time they
were right on. <g>
