One of the few things I remember specifically from the linguistics portion of
my training as an anthropologist is that when we read words we tend to
"pronounce" them in our thoughts differently than we might pronounce them
aloud. This becomes apparent to me when I read British spellings, such as
Chris's "colour" in this post. My head tends to give it a bit of an extension
when the "u" comes in--kul-LURE, rather than kul-LOR.
It's also there where Brits insist of retaining the "s" where there should be a
"z". <wink> Realise reads differently to me than realize. More sibilance, if
sibilance is possible in "thinking" pronunciation.
