While I have no special knowledge on the subject it's my understanding
that orthodox Jews do not drive on the sabbath. That would imply that
they need to be within walking distance of the synagogue or some form of
public transportation. I suspect that public transportation in much of
New Zealand is pretty sparse just as it is in the suburbs of the US.
Maybe even much sparser. That explains why I can spot them in New York
City or in and near the local university (which has a large NYC student
body many of whom are Jewish) but rarely see them elsewhere.

Whether you see them on TV or the internet I suppose depends very much
where you are and what you watch or, as in Brian's case, even if you see
them do you understand what you're seeing. Perhaps not if such sights
are rare and there is no one there to explain.

As a photographer after "retiring" I've shot many Bar/Bat Mitzvas
alongside my photographic mentor who, while not Jewish, was married to a
Jewish woman and explained to me much of what I'd otherwise not know of
or understand. Furthermore, none of those congregations were very
orotohdox. Probably quite the opposite in suburban Boston. Were it not
for that I would know much less than I do. So, again, Brian's case
doesn't surprise me at all.
