I don't think Italy's economy itself is ailing. The problem is the
government spends more than it takes in through taxes, and politicians are
too cowardly to either raise taxes to cover it or lower spending to
current tax levels. After years of that, the public debt is so high it is
getting harder for the govt. to borrow more. Ireland, Greece, and Spain
had the same problem but at a much worse/higher level.
