You'd be surprised. East of State College, PA there is an 18th/19th
century roadhouse. It is two stories, the second floor being an open
ballroom floor, with a slate roof and three-foot thick walls made of granite
blocks. There is a fireplace on the ground floor and I was told that
keeping a moderate fire in it through the winter kept the place comfortably
warm.
