The latest cholesterol hypothesis is that the "bad" cholesterol is not
LDL per se but rather small, dense LDL particles. There are also large,
fluffy ones which are considered good guys... well, maybe we can just
consider them to be OK if not actually good. The small particles are
considered the bad guys because they are small enough that they can work
their way into the intima (the inner layer of an artery or vein) where
they ultimately show up in arterial lesions. But, AFAIK, no one has
explained why and how a normal component of the blood should decide to
take up residence in (and only in) the arterial and carotid arteries.
Not sure why they don't also around with the veins in my arms. However,
since Lipitor is now off-patent it's clear that we need a new hypothesis
and appropriate drugs to combat those little buggers digging into my
intiamae (did I get my Latin plural correct?)

But if you do want to raise your HDL and lower your LDL and
triglycerides then you should consider going on an Atkins-like low carb
(high fat) diet. The data is right here from Christopher Gardner,
assistant professor of medicine at Stanford U. He admits to being
astonished by his own research since he has been a life-long vegetarian.
Caution: more than an hour long but he's a good speaker.

Enjoy your eggs, bacon, cream and cheese while you lower your cholesterol.
