This tip is from Ctein's "Digital Restoration from Start to Finish: How
to repair old and damaged photographs"

This is the second edition
<http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Restoration-Start-Finish-Second/dp/0240812085/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1329143081&sr=1-1>
but I have both and actually prefer the first edition
<http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Restoration-Start-Finish-photographs/dp/0240808142/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1329143081&sr=1-3>
Amazon doesn't sell it any more but it can be found from other sellers
on that link.

It's a great resource for anybody doing restoration or even just retouching.
