I recall driving on the A9 immediately west of Perth (UK, not WA) and being
distracted by engine noise approaching from the rear on my nearside, only to
see a Hercules flying westwards along Strathearn. Below me. The road there
is about 130 metres AOD. 

It was more than a few years ago...

That sounds like freedom, indeed!

Along those lines (almost), a Herc colleague told me that when they first
flew to Afghanistan they could fly their Fat Alberts at low level down the
valleys (for essential training, you understand, not because it was
enjoyable . . .); there is no way that they could do it now!
