My late father-in-law had a portrait studio in the late 40s - early 50s,
where he shot portraits with a split 5x7 back on an 8x10 studio camera.
This gave him two 3 1/2 by 5 negatives on each sheet of film. My wife and
her mother exposed proofs by sunlight at the rear window. Customers were
cautioned that the proofs would be ruined if exposed to light for an
extended period. After the choices were made, he retouched the chosen
negatives using very sharp, hard pencils. He could remove zits, etc and
make beautiful portraits. We have a number of them.
