Yes, Chris B, correct; I should have written 4 o'clock south-EAST

Chuck, NZ has many "exotic" plants. Ponderosa pines were imported during
a search 100 years ago for a basis for production forests to replace the
indigenous forests that were being decimated at a fast rate to expose prime
land for farming.
Even more strange, perhaps, are Pinus radiate and Cupressus macrocarpa
from California which, speaking is terms of a geological time-frame, were
close to being extinct, until 1800's gold-rush fortune-seekers brought their
seeds to NZ, Australia, and South Africa. As a result, and since for a long
time all the natural pests had been left behind, Pinus radiata has proven to
be a very adaptable, versatile and productive forest and farm tree. Old
radiata pines are icons of the NZ rural landscape.
Andrew F might have another take on this ... :-)
The natural resistance of Cupressus macrocarpa to the hedging effect of
strong salt winds on the California coast soon saw Cup. mac, used as for
large hedges all around NZ.
More recently, its fine odorous timber, the heartwood of which is naturally
durable against insects and many fungi, has come to fill a niche in specialist
furniture and house construction.

Michael W, yes, it is a place very different from Hong Kong.
Research Clyde, New Zealand. .... Not much to attract most people I have to
say, but it's where I call home now.

Isolated small town, about as far from the sea as it is possible to get in New
Zealand - only about 15 km from that exact spot.

And while I'm writing (sorry about confusing threads - for those who use
them,I can't at the moment be bothered starting more separate posts), great
fireplace image Jim; is that a gas fire?
Michael W; great images from your 1800's lenses and large format. Very
impressive.
Moose, that camera seems very versatile and a sharp lens. Nice colours
too. (When I hooked up broadband I was able to look at lots in a hurry).
Nathan, what a great family portrait. I also noticed the warm colouring - but
that's the photographer's perogative ... my question ... did Lars use the
same camera - to - person distance for all shots?

Brian Swale.
