I did some searching, and found that, for the E-XXX cameras, the remotes 
connect to the same camera outlet used for USB connections.  This is a 
multi-pin connector that can accept plugs for different purposes.  The only 
problem with the wired releases is that they  are all less than 3 feet in 
length.

The RC releases use a receiver that connects to this same connector, with a 
short wire that allows the receiver to be supported by the camera or tripod 
(easily taped to a tripod leg).  This would allow me to place the 
camera/tripod assembly close to the action, and trip the shutter from a safe 
distance, so as not to spook the birds, insects, etc.  I may look into one 
of these.

The E-1 uses a different, round connector for a remote cable, hence is not 
compatible with the later devices.
