Some recent talk about lenses in the 200 mm range and links MikeG posted got me
thinking about the old Nikkor lenses I
inherited from my father that are just sitting around, particularly an early
200/4, and how these earlier lenses might
differ from later ones.

So I looked around for an adapter. The Fotodiox 'consumer' level adapter was
little more than one directly from China
and they had another item I thought would be handy that brought the order up to
the free shipping level.

It's nicely made, and the combination of material and design makes the
relatively simple split 'springs' seem sturdy and
likely to last.

Then I tried to use it. The 200/4 and another non/pre AI lens worked fine. They
have a tiny skirt at the back that
slightly covers the lens/mount meeting. On the adapter, that skirt didn't quite
reach the face of the adapter.

AI, AI-S and a few later variants dropped the skirt except for two pieces, a
long and a short one, that are keys for the
body to know the aperture set. They are parts of the aperture ring itself and a
second set of aperture numbers on the
long one provide the viewfinder aperture readout that Oly never had.

HOWEVER, these 'ridges' as Nikon called them, go slightly further back from the
mount surface than did the old skirts.
And at least on the adapter I got, press rather firmly against the adapter
body. It's just possible to mount the lenses,
with considerable difficulty, and equally difficult to turn the aperture ring.
Useless in practical terms.

I explained this to them and just got back a response asking me to call one of
two support specific people, who will, I
presume, talk me through mounting the lenses properly. Ain't gonna work, but I
suppose I have to do it in order to get a
return auth. A bit cheap, too, as the support # isn't toll free. Fortunately, I
have unlimited US long distance.

The other thing I ordered, a neoprene camera cover, is FAR from the right size
for the camera I ordered it for. Looking
at some other of their listings for these things, I see that they have all
sorts of errors in the sizes for various
cameras. The listings for the E-4xx and 5-xx Olys, have the stock number for
one to fit a 1Ds!

Two useless things in hand. Not impressed with Fotodiox so far.
