Ah well, practice makes semi-competent. Probably can't be done well without
creating a mask. I created a masked layer
for the two flowers to hold the changes to them. Then a layer below could be
altered , with Curves in this case, to tone
down the background, and wouldn't affect the flowers.

Just a suggestion. I know I sometimes don't see an obvious possibility to
improve something and appreciate suggestions
