Seeing the smoldering remains of the CTV building reminded me of what
happened to the WTC. Very sad indeed.
Alas, the CTV building appears to have been built using light
construction methods (steel with post-tension flooring?). Works great
under static loading, but with sections of missing floor sections (for
studio spaces?) the building couldn't handle the nearly 2G forces.
Unless the steel is gussetted, the flexing would be too much.
It's going to take a while for NZ to recover from this pair of severe
earthquakes.
