Here's Canon's response: We dunno nuthin'

Dear Chuck Norcutt:

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon
customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your 540 EZ
and 580 EX.

We have not tested nickle zinc batteries. So we are not sure of there
exact effect. If they are higher voltage than the normal 1.5v batteries,
you may not want to use them. Them higher voltage could short the
circuitry.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your 540
EZ and 580 EX.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Larry
Technical Support Representative
