I recal a test a year or so ago done by Autoweek Magazine. There were a
variety of models tested, from a prius to a Corvette. Autoweek found, and
often repeats that a diesel car is the best net automotive deal as the
purchase price is much less than the hybrids, for similar mileage. Oddly,
the Corvette got one of the bet scores of the test, with remarkable
mileage, but the driver admitted to using a light foot.

And for God's sake, AG, don't be one of those old farts that slows down as
he drives his Prius, paying more attention to the gas mileage guage than to
the road!

I doubt he can buy a new camera now, the car he bought to 'save' money cost
$23,000 to 28,000 depending on what Prius model he bought and what options
he got.

I suspect that it will take several years of driving it to even break even
(that is, before the money 'saved' on gas finally exceeds the purchase price
of the car + interest paid on the loan).

I have a big car that gets poor gas milage. People say to me, why don't you
buy a smaller car and save on gas? Why not? Because I did the math and
realized that if I bought a car with twice the fuel economy of my car it
would only save me about $1000 a year, and a good used car (one that isn't a
piece of shit that will require constant costly repair) will cost me at
least $6000 where I live, and would likely be worn out before it even breaks
even in fuel savings. I'll drive my car till it falls apart, then buy
something else.
