Don't know about New Zealand, but over here, OI think that that sort of
vigilante crap is a product of the constant stream of stupid "news" stuff on
cable TV and AM radio. It's important to remember that the news media are a
monster that needs constant feeding, and by whipping up things, gain
ratings. Sure, the guy could have been a pervert, but a few simple questions
would have resolved things easily. Foolish people, a majority of our
residents (see results of the latest elections.), don't act that way, but
respond to something emotionally. The person who started all this is a
distant relative of the people who, in the fifties, saw a commie under every
bed.

Pervert or proud father?
Kendall Langston is a Christchurch dad; a proud one.

Friday on Campbell Live
How does a father photographing his daughter playing netball get labelled a
criminal? How would you feel if the police were called and your car
blockaded by vigilantes?

I *very* seldom watch TV, but I did watch this one on Friday night.

Netball is the female version of basketball, and is very popular in New
Zealand.
This Dad, Kendall Langston, has a 10-years old daughter with whom he
spends a fair bit of time and encourages at sport/netball. He is a very
solid
guy, and company senior staffer, and ex?? Police/Army.

He came along to his daughter's game at a stadium in Christchurch. She is
goal-shoot, so it was easy to get close to her game and he took 3 photos
with a little Fuji camera. Next minute he was being accosted by a very
agitated forceful woman. I don't remember all she did at ring-side, but she
told him that stadium rules are that no photographs may be taken of players
without prior (a) stadium approval (b) player approval (c) parent/guardian
approval. He was unaware of all this. She may have asked for the images
to be deleted; I don't remember.

After the game was over, he and his daughter went to their car to go home,
and there was the same woman noting his licence plate number and who
stood behind his car to prevent him reversing out and going home. From
what I have read there could also have been a posse of other women
accosting him. Soon the police were there, and wanted to see the images; I
don't remember all that the police were reported as saying or doing, but on
chimping the images were happy with all but one which had a little of
another player, and recommended he crop that bit out. He deleted the
frame. The police released him to go home, commenting that he ought to
put some air in his rear tyre. I suppose one of the female vigilantes had
let
air out.

I note at this point that there have been occasions when guys have been
discovered taking "up-skirt" photos of netball players. The players do wear
very short skirts.

He was upset all weekend over this unpleasant and disturbing chain of
events, and eventually it got onto Campbell Live which is a popular 7pm
show.

Feedback to Campbell after the show was very supportive of the father
including by women viewers, one of whom asked what would have
happened if a woman mother of a young rugby player was seen taking
photos of her son at a rugby game?

I haven't tried viewing the TV video link but some of you with faster online
access than I have might want to take a peep.

I have to say I find the whole thing distasteful, and I'm glad it wasn't me
as
the father as I might have *lost it*. He did keep his cool very well, I
thought.
