Brian, if his ADSL connection is still flakey, I suspect that there
are still telephones, fax machines or cable/satellite TV set-top boxes
connected to the telephone lines without the in-line filters. ALL
items attached to the telephone jacks EXCEPT the ADSL modem MUST have
the in-line filters.
I'm just curious as to the relationship you have with your S.O.'s
offspring that he won't let you share his broadband connection. All it
takes is a wireless router, which is almost dirt cheep and can be
purchased used, to allow every WiFi enabled computer in the house to
share the connection.
On a side note, this Saturday, our Internet connection at the condo
went south. Hmm. Not good. 10AM on a Saturday morning is not a time we
like to do maintenance. I got no emergency text messages on my
cellphone so I didn't think we had a fiber-cut or anything. Decided to
call it in to see what was up. No dial-tone. Double-hmmm. So I got my
shoes on and decided to mosey down to the central office to see what
was going on. As I opened the garage door I could see a service truck
in the driveway. I knew the technician and talked for a while.
The entrance cable to the condo wasn't done correctly. The cable
literally was hanging over the electrical meters instead of coming up
from the ground in a conduit and directly into the NID. I had
complained about that when I moved in, but long since forgot about it.
Well, he fixed that and also took the time to ground the NID like it
was supposed to be.
End result is rather amazing. Our telephone is almost twice as loud
(and clear) as it was before. Static was gone! And now my ADSL modem
is training up at the assigned speed and not downgrading like it was.
Yes, it screams now.
At least there is one benefit to living in a condo. There are plenty
of neighbors really close by that don't have secured wireless networks
and have cable-modems.
