Chuck,

Thanks for your tips. I have used similar PS techniques but don't always
find the results to my liking. The tools definitely help to get to a better
end result.

Last year I shot with an E-3/12-60 combo and the flash rig but also did some
no flash shots with a 420 and 50mm f2. Some of the latter came out pretty
good but didn't work for everything. My intention this year was to try to
get to a midpoint between the two. Of course that midpoint may be an
impossibility for a technical perspective.

Maybe we don' need no steenkin' flashes. Last year I took some pictures
of my daughter's children and it was necessarily in bright sun... and
they were wearing white. The fill flash was a little too hot, burned
some highlights, darkened the background and made things a mess for me
to correct. As I mentioned not long ago, this year I decided to try
without fill flash and make up the difference in PhotoShop. Here's what
I've got so far.

This year was some better light. It was late morning with a bit of haze
in the sky. I managed to put them in dappled shade but dappling always
bothers me. Anyhow, as you can see from above it was very easy to apply
a little exposure adjustment, a little shadow fill, a little highlight
recovery, and a bit of "clarity". What's missing for sure is the flash
catch lights. I'm not sure what if anything I'll do from here but it's
certainly possible I think to do without the flash and make do with
post-processing. Even the shot on the tire in full sun doesn't look too
bad.
