Agreed, switch-mode type DC-DC converters are a well known item. Vicor makes
some nice ones, I've replaced them before in a Jeff Rowland Model 10 audio
power amp. In that case they were 500w units, about the size of a deck of
cards, and went from 300vdc to I think 24 or 48vdc, no AC conversion required.
Very nice little self-contained package, all epoxy sealed up and whatnot. They
require decent heat-sinking to achieve the 500w rating, but they are quite
reliable when properly installed.
