John, what the dealer probably liked least about the lens is that his
profit margin on it was less than on the more expensive lenses.
I have two of the Summarits, the 2.5/35mm and the 2.5/75mm. Both are
made in Germany (unless Leica is lying), and both are excellent,
especially the 75mm (and I have owned both Summiluxes and Summicrons
in the past).

I consider the introduction of this lens line one of the few smart
marketing/product moves by Leica in the past several years. By
lowering the barrier to entry they probably have gained a sizeable
amount of lens sales that would otherwise have gone to the used market.

Having said all this, Erwin Puts has a review of the Summarit line on
his site:
http://www.imx.nl/photo/leica/lenses/lenses/page83.html
from which it appears that the 50mm is the weakest member of the
Summarit line, optically speaking.
