I think the Sony is just doing ordinary pano stitching.  The other stuff 
is something entirely new.  Not building a much larger image but a much 
sharper image from multiple images covering nearly (but not quite the 
same) area.  Check the New Scientist link for a demo using a Nikon 
taking multiple low res shots of the moon with a zoom set at only 38mm.
Impressive.
