Sometimes you must abandon the comfort zone. I've been envious of
Nathan and others on this list for some time because they seem to be
completely comfortable shooting on the street. Me, I'd rather eat
worms. But then from time to time you've got to do something that
scares you, right? It's not that I don't want to, it's just that my
testicular complement is not up to the job. Or hasn't been.

So two weekends ago I visited my cousin in Cambridge, Massachusetts,
and lugged the D3 along. Despite biting cold and a desire to remain
in her house to play with her kids, I ventured forth. And I found my
fears to be true: I was _way_ outside my comfort zone. Give me a good
lighthouse any day! But I persisted. Actually talked to only one or
two people, including he woman in the first shot on the page.

The two dollars she's holding toward the camera came from my pocket.
It's quite a close crop from the original frame, but at 100 percent
you can read the serial numbers on the bill. I continue to be amazed
at how sharp that camera with a 24-70 can be, if I don't do something
to mess it up.

There was no stealth involved. One cannot be stealthy with a Nikon D3
around one's neck. It attracted quite a bit of attention. I lacked
the courage to stick it on 24mm and just fire away, but maybe that
will come with practice.

The big surprise was finding a statue of John Harvard, founder of the
university, with a crowd of tourists. Everyone was touching the toe
of his shoe. Seems that it's supposed to bring good luck. Or more
smarts. I wasn't sure which. But a lot of people touched the toe. I
put three shots, I think, on the page.

And then there was the completely unpublicized yet-to-be-unveiled
Harvard Monument to Manhood. I managed to slip in and get a shot of
that, too. Unfortunately, it remains under wraps for the time being.
I'm not sure when the cover comes off. Frankly, I was very surprised
to find a monument to manhood at an Ivy League university.

Most of the shots have been extensively cropped to no particular
ratio. I doubt any of them will ever be printed. My intent was web
use only, and that for a limited time.

So fire away. Hit me with your best shots. <g>
