You are quite right that willow wood was the favorite material to make
wooden shoes of in the old days. 

But we were discussing pollard willows (knotwilgen in Dutch) and the
twigs which result from the polling are obviously of no use for shoes
(or it must be for _very_ small feet!).

That is why I didn't mention it.

I must add that I hate wooden shoes, and have always done so. I always
got cold feet in them... It was also psychological, wooden shoes being
associated with the poor and uneducated in my youth. And later indeed
with tourists and "hobby" gardeners. Duh...
