I selected a couple slides which I knew were F50 and F100.  The grain of
these older films definitely is higher, but it is also quite apparant that
the halation issue is far less of an issue.  When sharpening Provia, I end
up accentuating the grain which ends up giving me about the same noisyness
as the less halated film.  So, for right now, with a minimum of hard
testing, I'd have to say that it's probably a wash.  I'd suggest that F50
and Velvia are in a world of their own when it comes to implied details in
vegetation, but that's another subject.
