I believe it's a state law in Oregon. It's not that the attendants are
petulant, it's that they could probably loose their jobs for letting you
pump your own.
One of our first trips down to Lincoln City with you much younger boys,
we were stopped at a station getting filled. I'm guessing our kids were
five and six or thereabouts. At any rate, about half way through the
fill up, my oldest was watching the person manning the pump and said
"Daddy, what's that man doing?". He'd never seen an attendant growing
up here in Washington. Only seen his old man or mom filling the car up.
