I believe that many cameras (if not all) do generate a thumbnail which is
embedded in the main image. The Minolta A1, for example, stores a small
thumbnail for preview on the camera if only raw files are being saved. My
Canon 5D stores a roughly 4 MP JPEG image with raw files even if you don't ask
it to save JPEGs as well. Every camera is different.

Based on the scenario you outlined it sounds as though there must be a bug in
the camera firmware or the viewing software you're using (if the viewing
software had recently displayed the older image in the same session). I'd try
viewing the files on the computer again using a different viewer. If the old
thumbnail doesn't show up any more or if the other viewing software doesn't
show it any more then it was probably a memory cache bug in your existing
viewing software. Otherwise a bug in the camera firmware possibly exacerbated
by image deletion in camera. Remember my admonitions the other day not to
delete in camera?
