Hi Richard
The ram wears a harness which attaches a bag of blue dye to the front if its
neck. The farmer can then check that all the ewes
have been mounted during the course of the breeding season. Any ewes without
the blue patch on their back just behind the neck can
then be given some one on one with the ram to ensure that they will give birth
that year.
Any with blue dye on their rump indicates that the ram is of French extraction
and is referred to as a 'soixante neuffer' :-)
