Yes, you are correct that apart from the IS for MF lenses function which is
now incorporated in the camera body, the independent chips do allow focus
confirmation for MF lenses.
These Chinese chips are only AF confirmation chips. The Russian IS+AF chip
has progressed to a selectable focal length model with the most pedestrian
method for programming that I have ever seen. I would say it is pretty
unworkable when the camera now provides the same facility. But, curiously,
the previous generation Russian chip provided something that the camera does
not provide - the ability to have a chip+adapter dedicated to a specific
focal length, avoiding the need either to set the focal length in camera or
to program it into the chip. Will they revert to Plan A, I wonder?

I believe the firmware is only for the E-3, no?
Those with older E bodies can get focus confirmation with the chips.
