I think that setting up your own website is the best thing. But, Flickr
never stole anyone's photos, what happened is that companies looking for
free photos go to sharing sites and just take them. Many people on Flickr
have high res images on there that are commercially usable, while
photographers with their own sites know to resize the photos down to a size
that looks good on screen but not in print....so people wanting it have to
ask for it and pay if the photographer wants payment.

Flickr does not take your copyright so you are safe there. If you want to
use it just make sure that you put on your Flickr pages that the images are
copyrighted and not free so that visitors to the site won't be tempted to
make commercial use of them without your permission. And size them to
something that doesn't look good in print, like 640x480 pixels. Someone
could still steal them for web use, but there's no way around that, and the
worst offenders seem to be using images for printed ad campaigns.
