You're right about the doesn't warn you part.  It happily "calibrated" 
my wife's monitor which is truly a piece of junk and, just as you 
encountered, doesn't get bright enough for a correct display.  I guess 
my advantage was that her monitor is so bad that there was little 
visible difference between the before and after states so it was pretty 
clear that the monitor was toast and not simply out of color balance.

I've offered to replace it for her but she doesn't want to spend the 
money.  For her it works just fine even though the pictures of the grand 
kids look awful on that monitor.
