Command line working has its advantages. Dir /s ^p comes to mind, useful
still in Windows. As far as ImageMagick is concerned, a quote from their
home page will be enough to show how it actually suits Tim's original need
quite well (added emphasis is mine):

"ImageMagick includes a number of command-line utilities for manipulating
images. Most of you are probably accustomed to editing images one at a time
with a graphical user interface (GUI) with such programs as gimp or
Photoshop. However, a GUI is not always convenient. Suppose you want to
process an image dynamically from a web script or **you want to apply the
same operations to many images** or repeat a specific operation at different
times to the same or different image. For these types of operations, the
command-line image processing utility is appropriate."

command line? OMG .. back to the old Kaypro days? CP/M

it looks like it might be effective, but I'm not going back to command line,
I'm getting to old for that...

I programmed in C and scripted DOS years back..I went from DOS 6.1 to
Windows 2K in one step, skipping the WIN95/ME revolution... and now I have a
stable XP platform, I dont think I'll be doing much in way of changes for
years to come.

http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php
I haven used it except as a couple of command lines getting duplicate images
after recovering a directory that I got over exuberate with the rm command.
It appears to be compiled for MS windows, OSX, and UNIX. Since I'm running
Suse 10.0 I assume multiple flavors of unix. I don't have a feel about the
learning curve at all. If you download it give a review if you would.
