I like the matte screens for use with long tele lenses. I get along with
them fine for most applications but some people with failing vision really
seem to need the split screen focusing.

I find it interesting the way these things seem to come and go.
Several years ago there was quite a bit of opinion expressed that a
matte screen with no other focusing aids was the way to go. I even
considered it myself but decided that having 90 percent of the screen
already in matte was enough. Some even said that there was a certain
lack of precision with the split screen, that the apparent precision
was misleading and that they could get a more accurate focus with
the matte. There was a lot of chatter from people who were replacing
their 13 screens with matte ones and some of them being sent to John
to have grid lines inscribed on them.

I guess it is a different crowd though. Those who formerly went for
matte are probably happy with the the current default screen in their
AF cameras and those who depended on the other aids want them now,
especially when doing manual focus with those OM lenses.
