Google Earth shows some pretty rough terrain between Mount Athos and
the mainland. They have a few interesting pictures too. It's pretty
easy to see why ships are the main method of supply.

The satellite images don't have great detail but it looks like there
is a "road" zig zagging up the mountain side to the west then heading
over to the monastery.
