Martyn,

Most of the Dursts that I have handled use a smooth on smooth system and not
gears for the focusing and column adjustments. The mechanisms rely on a
spring steel pressure plate on the drive wheel to sustain pressure on the
travel rail. You can adjust the pressure on them usually with only a little
dismantling depending on which one you need to get to (the focusing one is a
bit buried inside). In your case you may need to remove the head from it
carriage but probably not. On the back of the column you should see a cover
plate over the mechanism, remove this cover. Underneath you should find a
rectangular black metal plate with a crosshead screw in each corner. There
should also be a pair of brass colored dots in the bottom half (these are
the actual bearing points for the crank). Tighten the screws at the bottom
half slightly (quarter turn should do it) until you get solid traction on
the column.

It actually occurs to me that if it is a rack and pinion mechanism these are
often governed by a similar pressure plate arrangement (the Beselers are all
done like this).

Hope this helps, Dan S.

Hi,
Just got a second-hand Durst M670, not in very good condition but still
seems to be in working order - generally. One particular problem, the head
will not stay in place - tends to roll down the column when not supported.
Is there any way to tighten up the rack & pinion mechanism to stop this?
Wouldn't be worth taking to a professional repair shop (even if I could find
one). If all else fails I will pull the thing apart & try to bodge it up,
just thought it might be worth seeking advice first.
Thanks - Martyn
