I took a 2 1/2 mile hike today on land owned by the Berkshire Natural
Resources Council. The area has an interesting history. Twice in the past
developers have attempted to build a dam to create a large body of water...
once in the 19th century to store water for industrial use (mills) and once
in the 1960's to create a "lake" in order to sell waterfront property. In
both instances the dams failed and lives were lost and lawyers were kept
busy. Today the area has been restored to its somewhat natural state and is
cared for by the BNRC. The larger body of water in the middle right part of
the image is Basin Pond. The image was taken standing on the remains of the
old earth dam, about 25 feet up. That old dam was holding back an immense
amount of water, at least for a brief time.
