I use a small Novoflex 19 ball head on an REI monopod/walking staff when I
backpack (really small and lightweight). Around town, I have a C*n0n Monopod
100 with a built-in ball head. The Novoflex isn't sturdy enough for large
lenses, so it never sees the tripod.
