Well, that is the lore according to the longtime list members here. 
So when I had the chance to pick up a 1,132,XXX  S/N at a reasonable 
price I grabbed it, despite already owning a 896,XXX copy.

My quick test showed the earlier lens was, if anything, a little 
sharper in the corners wide open; but I slightly preferred the bokeh 
of the later one. That lens did have a small dent to the filter ring, 
so I can't rule out the possibility it had gotten bumped out of best 
alignment.

Subtle differences in any case. I wouldn't worry about it.

On the other primes, I can't say enough good about the 85/2, probably 
my all-time favorite lens.
