Baffinland is still in development stages, we have to put in a lot more
infrastructure before we have the machine shops in place.

There is a lot of other mines needing skilled people such as E'Kati, Diavik,
DeBeers Snap Lake, Tahera; other mining services companies all need machinists
as well. Bucyrus, TransWest are mining equipment suppliers that repair and
service heavy equipment that are always looking for trades. Then there is the
oil companies themselves ( Shell, Husky, PetroCanada, and many others )that
have their own shops and also contract out work to other machine shops. The oil
sands are a going concern in Alberta.

My Father in Law has a machine shop and he has actually brought over machinists
from UK to work for him ( he's from the UK as well) becase he cannot get the
experience he needs to keep up his work in his shop..

He has a Fortune CNC and some other brand of CNC machine, and many manual
machines, and cranks out a couple million tons of steel work a year at the
shop, he is 76 years old and re-mortgaged his house to buy another CNC machine
so he can keep up to demand building flanges,

The average wage for a machinist in Canada is 30.00 +/- a couple dollars, there
is a ton of work everywhere for the trades people, and even for doctors and all
medical fields and depending on the lifestyle that you chose to work at, you
can live in remote or rural areas. I chose work in remote areas, although there
is no shortage of work in the cities. In Alberta Canada, you can basicly
interview your employers and determine if you want to work for them or not.

Every business everywhere there is hurting for skilled and experienced people,
and in fact hire any warm bodies that walk through the door, regardless of
experience, addictions or any other hindrances.. they just cant get the people
they need to keep up with demand. Every restaraunt, bar, hotel and service
supplier needs people..

Our government can ( and do) import thousands of immigrants from non-euorpean,
non english speaking countries, just to say we are "doing our best", although
if they cant speak english, it takes 2-3 years before we can integrate them
into the work force, and in the mean time, the government supports them
financially while they complete the immigration procedure. Lots of them just
"dissapear" into the underground economy of their particular ethnic
backgrounds, many not even completing the immigration procedures..

Check workopolis.com for a little more info o trades in Canada.

Cheers.. Tim

Hi Tim,

You've got me intrigued, any idea how much they pay their machinists? Is
this year round work, or just in the warm season? ;^)
