Well, I finally got around to putting together a new computer. Here are
the details:
Antec case w/ PS
Asus M2N SLI Deluxe (AM2)
AMD 64 x2 4200+
2@ PNY GeForce6600 256mb
2gb DDR2 6400
2@ WD 250gb SATA
DVD r/w
Samsung 204B 20.1" monitor
Total price about $1200 before rebates. Just updated the BIOS, chipset,
video to the latest. Installed Photoshop today and this thing really
flys. Still have a lot of software to install plus peripherals. Curious
to see how the FS4000 works but haven't pulled the SCSI card from the
old box yet. So far the monitor is OK and better than my current one but
not great. We'll see how the profiling goes.
Questions:
- How big should the PS scratch disk be? I'm thinking to put it on HD 2
in a dedicated partition. Those scanned files are pretty big.
- Is it worth the upgrade to XP 64bit for PS? I'd have to dual boot for
my other apps.
