Hello Michael,

First about the eye switching question:

I don't know about switching, but have allways used my left eye for
viewing any kind of viewfinder. In the "early days" (before I was 23
that is) that was no problem at all. Also when using binoculars I could
not use both eyes at the same time and used my left eye only. Now I have
a small binocular with which I can look through both eyes at the same
time. In the later days, for allmost 20 years now, I have been wearing
glasses. Using the left eye while photographing is quite a nuisance
since my right hand allways touches my glasses and smears all over it.
Does not bother me enough to try and switch to using my right eye
however. Still think it is a pain to use my right eye.

On your eye condition:

First of all I have to excuse myself for my lack of English. Since
English is not my native tongue I run into my limitations with this type
of technical or medical discussions. Yet I want to share my experiences
with you, so my English will have to do.

A few years ago the left eyesight of my mother started to deteriorate.
She was 70 by that time. Slowly but surely she saw less and less. The
oculist said it was a sign of her aging and said nothing could be done.
Thed blood veins in the back of her eye had either sprung or got
clogged, resulting in a partially dead retina. She ended up with about
6% vision in her left eye now. A few years later her right eye began
develloping the same problem and the oculist persisted that nothing
could be done. We decided not to accept defeat and consulted a
specialist in the Rotterdan Eye Hospital. He agreed with what was
happening but was willing to have her operated. Hed had had a student
who had specialised himself in Belgium and became a professor. He had
develloped a new kind of operations:

#1: Lifting the retina from the back of the eye, removing defective
vains. Rotate the retine in the eye, so the image is projected on a less
damaged part of the retina. Leave the retina lifted with oil behind it.

#2: About 10 weeks later. Rotate the eye to counteract the rotation of
operation #1and remove the oil. That did the job. Two years ago she was
the first one in the Netherlands who had the operation done.

Because her retine came loose about half a year later a new operation
was neccesary:

#3: Tighten the retina and leave some oil behind it. The eye is still
the same now, about one and a half year later, the vision is about 30%
light and sharpness. The loss in sharpness is caused by the displacing
of the retina. The outside of the retine contains fewer "pixels" than
the center of the retina. The center was damaged and could not be
reused.

My mother does not have good sight anymore, that is clear by now, but
because of the operations the deterioration of the eyesight has been
halted. If we had not done anything about is her eyesight would have
been even less than in her other eye by now. In the condition she is in
now she can walk without help (driving and cicling is not possible any
longer) and with special glasses she can read if there is enough light.
She no longer plays bridge. She could see the cards in her hand but not
the ones on the table.

This story was not meant to make any of you feel sorry with my mother or
me. Instead it was meant to advertise that it is not allwasy wise to
listen to the first advise, especially if there are possibilities of
improvement or less detorioration. If we had not listened to the firts
oculist she probably would have been left with considerably more
eyesight. I would advise you to let your oculist (or another one for a
second opinion) inform you of all the possibilities there are for you.

I hope all things will work out well for you.

As allways, just my experience and YMMV.
