As a native North Carolinian, I can testify that the Outer Banks are pretty
spiffy, particularly if you have a naturalist/geologist/hydrologist kind of
mindset. There's quite a bit more to do that fish on the beach. For example,
you can take long walks on the beach. <g> You also can eat some pretty good
seafood. There's a good bit of pirate lore around, as well as Hatteras
Light, and at one time the wild ponies of Okracoke Island. The ferry rides
are always a treat because of heavy seas. Cape Hatteras also is known as the
Graveyard of the Atlantic because of all the shipwrecks there. While on the
Outer Banks you can visit Jockey Ridge at Nags Head where the Wright Bros.
made the first powered flight. You can also mess around the Manteo area
where Sir Walter Raleigh established a colony that later disappeared, to
become known as The Lost Colony. There's a nice little theatrical production
that tells the tale.
North Carolina is a pretty long state. You can drive 600 miles from Manteo
on the coast to Murphy in the mountains. There's quite a bit in between,
modern and historical. Spend some time on the web before you go. Whatever
floats your boat you can find in North Carolina. That said, as a native Tar
Heel, I can assure you there's nothing you'd care to see in South Carolina.

Outter bank/cape hatteras sounds promising, what to do there besides
fishing on beach ?
Does it worth to ferry a car from hatteras to cape outlook ?
Other places in NC ?
Not any idea for south carolina yet.
