Marketing? If you solve a perceived problem for buyers, you can charge for
that solution.
There are a new crop of telecentric lenses from non-Oly makers now hitting
the market that adhere to the same philosophy as the ZD line. So maybe the
solution to the WA problem is new lenses?
You will also see some strategies going the other way. Leica rumors for a
digital M body say that they are utilizing a sensor design that stays flat,
but has microlenses to aid capture of the obtuse light rays at the edges of
the fram. This is due the fact that wide angle lenses on a rangefinder
body project a cone of light onto the film that strikes at a very
non-telecentric angle, giving sensors fits. These lenses are very close to
the film plane vs. SLR designs.

Looking at my latest OP issue, I stumbled upon an article about wide angle
lenses.
Interesting observation was that ZD lenses are closely priced to the
similar third party lenses and it seems to be a trend amongst the other
manufacturers too. I wander what that means...
