It was about the TTL Auto preflash performed by the FL-36 and FL-50:
"In this mode, pre-flash is performed to measure the optimum flash
intensity and then actual flash is performed"
One might expect that this pre-flash would be visible, but it is not.
Apparently the actual flash is fired so fast after the preflash that our
brains can't tell the difference. Compare it to the light bursts in
Super FP mode - these look like one flash to us.
